Already I've broken up a fight,
between a boy and a girl,
because of the name calling,
they yelled.
Already I've avoided comments,
made at me,
because I don't know how to respond,
to middle school girls saying they
want to date me.
Already I've made a student,
who was making so much trouble she sat alone,
say, with bright eyes,
"where'd you learn that?"
after I taught simple tricks of arithmetic.
Already I've felt the frustration,
and the gratification,
the headaches and the smiles,
of working with kids.
Doing work I'd do for free,
and gettin' paid for it.
