The Thing About Sports

As a player:
From the moment the ball is inbounded, the moment you yell "love everything" and throw up the first serve, the moment you lace up your shoes, the moment you step on the field, it don't matter the sport... from the very beginning, the world fades. Every little thought, little feeling, stress, anxiety, worry, concern,... every.. little.. thing.. fades. Nothing matters. Your purpose become simple: to win. Your mind & body in check to ensure the physical functions to your mind's command. And you leave it all. Every little thing... fades. I know this b/c it isn't til the last shot, til 6-4, til you stop to stretch, til you shake someone's hand "good game" that you fall back to earth and realize, once again, where you are, what you're doing, and what exactly your name is.

As a fan:
Whether you live next door, across the street, across the Bay, moved opposite of me to SoCal, in another state or across the globe in the Philippines... Whether you're a sibling, a parent, a friend, a co-worker, a roommate, an ex-roommate, a student in my classroom, a stranger walking past w/ a Laker tee... We both saw Kobe hit the jumper that won the game that won the series. We both saw Pacquaio gradually disconfigure De La Hoya's face. We both remember Horry's game 4 buzzer beater verse the Kings. We both caught the crazy triple overtime game tonight b/w the Bulls and the Celts. We both get goosebumps at the prospect of LeBron and Kobe going head-to-head 7 games in a row. We proceed to either reminisce in harmony or allow the rivalry between our teams tranform into a rivalry in our conversation. Sports transcend location, age, space, and time. They keep us connected.

Sick post. No pun intended ;P Yes, even those with swine flu (or not) got in on the action. So you can add, "Whether or not you're dying in your bedroom or living it up to the max outside..."
